DEMITRI

Someone was in my office. The door was ajar, and I was sure I’d locked it before I left last night. I hesitated with a hand on the knob. I should call the sheriff’s office—Levi at least—but he wasn’t my personal bodyguard. Shagging a guy twice didn’t make it mandatory for him to come to my rescue. When had I ever needed an alpha to fight for me?

I slowly nudged the door open, but it squeaked, and the small figure curled up on the love seat startled. They sat up so quickly they almost fell off. Sleepy green eyes in a pale face connected with mine.

“Casey?”

He rubbed at his eyes. “Fuck.”

I frowned at him. “Language.”

“Sorry.” He scrambled to his feet. “I planned to be gone before you got here.”

“Hey, slow your roll there.” He made a dash for the door, but I blocked his path. “What are you doing here? Levi and I were making plans to come to see you tomorrow.”

He stumbled back and peered up at me. “You were?”

“Yeah. What’s going on? Does Levi know you’re here? This isn’t a surprise visit, is it?”

He poked at the carpet with the toe of his sneakers. I really needed to get him better ones before he returned to the group home.

“Will you call him to verify if it’s true if I said yes?”

“Casey, tell me the truth. Why were you sleeping in my office? And how did you get in?” The broken glass… I frowned at him. “This isn’t the first time you’ve snuck in, have you?”

He wrapped his arms around his body. “I’m sorry. I just didn’t have anywhere else to go, and it’s too cold to sleep on the streets.”

“So, it was you who busted that window.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to break the window, but I panicked, and it was the only way I saw for me to get out without you noticing.”

I gestured for him to sit on the sofa where he’d been sleeping a few minutes ago. I perched on the desk, arms crossed over my chest. “I think you should start from the beginning. Does anyone know you’re here?”

He shook his head. “And I don’t want them to know either.” His eyes flashed, pointy chin raised. “They’ll only take me back to that group home. I hate it there.”

“Is it that bad?”

“Nobody talks to me.”

“Did you try to talk to anyone?”

“Why’d I do that?”

“Because it’s nice to have friends, Casey.”

He tucked his hands up into the sleeves of his shirt. “Nobody wants to be friends with someone like me. The other omegas don’t think I fit in, and the alpha ones just want to score.”

My stomach soured at the implication of his words, and a fierce protective instinct surged through me. Every night I went to bed, I thought long and hard about applying to be a foster parent so I could take him in. I’d only taken this long because I needed to be sure I could provide the best possible home for him and meet all his needs.
